Rescue stories
Congratulations to the adopters of Crown. Crown was a TB rescue that proved to be an incredibly sweet horse. He is a happy family trail horse now.
Congratulations to Hope on her purchase of Brizi. Brizi was a 5yo TB gelding and one of our most underweight rescues. He was very emaciated and needed months of time to regain strength and weight. He found the perfect forever home with Hope and she has brought him to his full potential. We are so glad to see him happy and loved.
Quest was 8yo when she and 3 others came from WV as rescues in December 2012. Missy did not realize that Quest and her half brother were in as bad of shape as they were until the shipper called them to inform her there were two very emaciated horses in the group. Quest was overall in the worst shape of any rescue we've had here. She was very underweight with ribs and hip bones prominently showing under layers of winter hair. When looking over quest we realized what we thought was just an un-groomed coat was horrid rain rot. Quest ended up losing all of her hair across her back and top of her butt. She spent almost all of her first winter here inside and with multiple blankets-- It was the worst rain rot i have seen and resembled sever burns. Quest ended up healing nicely and being able to go outside-- by late Spring she was HUGE and a much different horse. She now is leased by one of our advanced students and is successful in the jumper ring. She has been an incredible horse to work with and I am proud to say all of her training off the track came at DTS.
Diamond is a 9yo TB mare and was one of Missy's favorite rescues. She took months of TLC, feed and training but proved to be very sweet and goofy. She was adopted early winter but Due to unforeseen circumstances Diamond returned to DTS in 2016, once again needing rehab. She is now up to proper weight and has taken a love for jumping. Diamond has begun her show career and will be staying at DTS.
the VA rescues (Hope and Peaches)
These are sweet horses that came from Virginia in Septeber 2016. They were posted online for cheap saying they would be taken to auction in a few days. They were said to be used with kids at a camp at some point years ago and unfortunately not well cared for at all. They will take a few months to recover and we will evaluate their training and find safe landings for them when they are ready.
Peaches (the chestnut appendix) has found a great adopter and has been doing some light riding at her new home.
We learned that the grey thoroughbred mare, Hope, is Julie's Brilliance. She was a very successful racehorse earning over $200k. She went on to be a broodmare producing successful racehorses. Hope was sold for $67,000 in 2004 and we are unsure how she ended up in the condition she arrived here in. Hope currently resides at a long time student of DTS house as a companion for her first horse. She will live out the rest of her life happy and well cared for.
Edens Boy
"Radio" came up through TFH from an adopter who deeply loved her horses but fell on hard times and could not care for them anymore. Unfortunately Radio had been through quite a hard time and came to DTS needing a lot of TLC. We were told he was blind in one eye but upon pick up we found that he was completely blind. Due to lack of nutrition and care Radio had cribbed and chewed so much that he was left with no top teeth. It was suggested that this gelding be put down due to the slim probability to be able to find him a good long term home. We wanted to give the sweet gelding at least 2 weeks of happiness and food before euthanize but we fell in love with his heart. This gelding was in such good spirits and so happy to have food and care that we simply did not have the heart to euthanize him. He is now a permanent resident of DTS and has touched all of our hearts.
